Jack's Eye Appointment

Jack had a follow up eye appointment yesterday. Nothing has changed, which is good. The pressure on his eyes is still normal and even though the backs of his eyeballs are still enlarged, they have not gotten larger. He will go again in 6 months. They are doing this to track any changes that would indicate the enlarged backs of his eyeballs is glaucoma or not. The appointment held some humor though. Jack had one eye covered, reading right through each line and each line would get smaller...it got really tiny (better than 20/20 tiny) and Jack says "If you would uncover my other eye, I could read this much faster!" HA! Dr. Frederick has been told many times our kids are adopted and we don't' have any family history on them...but he has lots of patients and never remembers. Yesterday after Jack was done, Jack jokingly said "dad's turn!" and Dr. Frederick put John in the chair and measured his eyes and then measured my eyes too...we thought it was to humor Jack. Well, Dr. Frederick got done and looked baffled. Finally he said "Jack's eyes are not like either of yours. Does anyone in your family have glaucoma?" John chuckled and said "Jack is adopted." You could just see the relief on Dr. Frederick's face...and he said "You have told me that before but both your kids look so much like you, I forget!" Maddie also had an eye appointment yesterday and once again has to use drops to dilate her good eye to force her brain to use her drifting eye. We are not worried about that though. Dr. Frederick says once she hits puberty, it should stabilize. As long as we can control it with the drops or patches, she will be fine. She goes back in 2 months to make sure it is working again. Lord willing she won't need surgery and we can keep it under control with drops and patching. Our insurance is not so good about paying for surgeries.
