Today the kids and I went to the Fallen Soldiers Healing Field (more info can be found here http://www.qctimes.com/articles/2007/08/16/news/local/doc46c3d81f14481096319958.txt )
The sight of the flags and the sound of them whipping in the wind made for emotions to well up for sure. The kids had lots of questions about why the flags were there so I did my best to explain to them what they represented. There was an older gentleman there the same time we were who told us about how he fought in the Korean War. This was our first field trip of the school year even though school officially won't start at the Christison's home until August 27th. The "memorial" stones were representing each of the wars and are a permanent fixture at the cemetery. They are set up in the shape of the pentagon. Jack told us he wants to be a soldier in the Army...and as scary as that sounds to me as a mother, if God should chose for him to fight for our freedoms, then so be it. Maddie said she would send him letters because as a girl, she will stay at home and be a veterinarian unless she gets married and then she will stay at home and take care of all her 10 children. What a blessing that would be to me as the grandmother of all those babies - tee hee :o) If you want to see the pictures larger, just click on each one. You should get a bigger view.

O.K., now I have a picture in my head of Maddie being the one to fly a fighter jet, while Jack stays on the ground as a mechanic! You go, girl!
